Is Blue 1 (Brilliant Blue FCF) something to worry about?

How is it regulated?

In the European Union, it is authorised as E133 under food colour legislation, but products containing it must carry a label warning that it may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children. Canada and Australia also permit its use with defined specifications.

How to spot it on a label

On US labels, look for 'Blue 1', 'FD&C Blue No. 1' or 'Brilliant Blue FCF' in the ingredient list — all three refer to the same substance. In EU-labelled products it appears as 'E133', often followed by the phrase 'may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children'. If a label reads only 'colour' or 'artificial colour' without a specific name, contact the manufacturer to confirm which dye is used.

What a cleaner swap looks like

Products coloured with spirulina extract, butterfly pea flower or phycocyanin (a pigment from blue-green algae) achieve blue and blue-green shades without synthetic dyes. Is Blue 1 vegan and halal?
