Commercially, it is either quarried from rock deposits or produced by combining calcium oxide with carbon dioxide. The food and pharmaceutical grades are highly purified forms of this same compound.

Both jurisdictions also regulate it separately under pharmaceutical standards when used in antacid or supplement products.
How to spot it on a label
On ingredient lists, calcium carbonate appears by that full name or as E170 in EU-labelled products. When it appears near phrases such as 'calcium-fortified' or as part of a nutrition claim, it is almost certainly there as a nutrient source rather than a functional additive. In antacid products it will typically be the lead active ingredient, listed separately from inactive excipients.
What a cleaner swap looks like
For calcium fortification, calcium-rich whole food ingredients such as almonds, tofu set with calcium salts, or sesame-based ingredients provide the mineral alongside other nutrients. If you are looking at a supplement, calcium citrate is often cited as an alternative that may be absorbed more readily, particularly for people with lower stomach acid. Neither swap is necessary from a safety standpoint; the choice usually comes down to absorption preferences or digestive comfort.
