If kojic acid causes irritation, alpha-arbutin is a widely studied alternative that works through a similar tyrosinase-inhibiting pathway and is generally considered gentler for sensitive skin. Vitamin C derivatives such as ascorbyl glucoside offer brightening with additional antioxidant benefit. Niacinamide is another well-tolerated option that reduces pigment transfer within skin cells rather than blocking its production directly.
