What is BHT?
Butylated hydroxytoluene is a petroleum-derived phenolic compound synthesised for commercial use. It works by donating hydrogen atoms to free radicals, interrupting the chain reactions that cause fats to oxidise and turn rancid. It has no natural food source and is produced entirely through chemical synthesis.
What does it do in the product?
BHT extends the shelf life of fatty foods and oils by preventing oxidative spoilage, which would otherwise cause off-flavours and odours. In cosmetics, it stabilises formulas by protecting oils, waxes, and colour pigments from breaking down on contact with air. It is sometimes applied directly to food packaging materials rather than the food itself, with migration into the food content being the intended or incidental effect.

Is BHT something to worry about?
BHT is broadly considered safe at typical dietary exposure levels by major food regulators, and it holds GRAS status in the United States for specified uses. Some animal studies using very high doses have raised questions about endocrine activity and tumour promotion, though results have not translated clearly to human risk at real-world intake. A subset of individuals reports sensitivity reactions such as skin rashes or respiratory symptoms, and some researchers have called for updated safety reviews given how long the compound has been in use.

How to spot it on a label
On food labels, it appears as either 'BHT' or its full name 'butylated hydroxytoluene', often listed near other preservatives such as BHA at the tail end of the ingredient list. In the US, manufacturers must also declare it when it migrates from packaging into food, sometimes phrased as 'packaging contains BHT to preserve freshness'. In cosmetics it typically appears as 'BHT' in the INCI ingredient list.
What a cleaner swap looks like
Products preserved with mixed tocopherols (a vitamin E-derived antioxidant), rosemary extract, or ascorbyl palmitate generally serve the same shelf-life function with a better-regarded safety profile. Look for the phrases 'preserved with vitamin E' or 'rosemary extract' in the ingredient list as signals that a manufacturer has chosen a plant-based antioxidant route. These alternatives tend to appear in natural, organic, or clean-label product lines.
