What is Citric Acid?
Citric acid is a weak organic acid found naturally in citrus fruits, berries, and many other plants. Commercially, almost all of it is produced by fermenting sugars using a specific mould strain. The resulting white crystalline powder is chemically identical to what occurs in a lemon.
What does it do in the product?
In food and drink, citric acid lowers pH, which slows microbial growth and prevents oxidation that would otherwise cause rancidity or discolouration. It also delivers the sharp, clean sour taste associated with citrus. In cosmetics, it adjusts a formula's acidity to keep it stable and gentle against skin.

Is Citric Acid something to worry about?

A small number of people report dental enamel erosion from frequent exposure to highly acidic foods and beverages containing citric acid, though this is a concern tied to quantity and contact time rather than the ingredient itself. Individuals with a rare condition called citric acid sensitivity, sometimes confused with citrus fruit allergy, may experience mild digestive discomfort, but this reaction is uncommon.
Who should pay attention

How is it regulated?
In the United States, the FDA classifies citric acid as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) for use across a broad range of food categories with no set upper limit in most applications. In the European Union, it carries the E330 designation and is approved as a food additive with permitted uses spanning virtually every food category, subject to good manufacturing practice guidelines. Both the FDA and EFSA have repeatedly reviewed the safety record and found no basis for restricting ordinary dietary intake.
How to spot it on a label
On an ingredient list, it appears as 'citric acid' or, in European products, as 'E330'; both names refer to the same substance. When you see it near ascorbic acid or tocopherols, it is typically acting as a synergist to boost antioxidant performance. In cosmetics, its position toward the end of the list usually means it is present in a small amount purely for pH adjustment.
What a cleaner swap looks like
If you want to reduce citric acid in your diet, look for products that use naturally fermented vinegar or lemon juice concentrate as acidulants, since these sources also deliver acidity but come with additional naturally occurring compounds. For baked goods, tartaric acid derived from wine-making by-products is another alternative some manufacturers use. Keep in mind that truly clean-label products still need some form of acidulant to maintain safety and shelf stability, so swapping the ingredient rather than removing acidity entirely is the realistic goal.
