What is Salicylic Acid?
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that occurs naturally in willow bark and certain plants, though commercial grades are almost always synthesised. It belongs to the same chemical family as aspirin. In personal-care products it functions as a keratolytic, meaning it helps loosen the bonds between dead skin cells.

Salicylic acid appears by its full name on most labels; you will rarely see an E-number because it is regulated as a drug or cosmetic active rather than a food additive in these applications. When you see it listed, check whether the product also carries a Drug Facts panel, which confirms it is functioning as an OTC medication at a regulated concentration. Nearby wording such as 'exfoliating', 'pore-clearing' or 'anti-acne' signals its intended role.
What a cleaner swap looks like
If you are looking for a gentler exfoliant, products formulated with low-concentration glycolic acid or lactic acid (alpha-hydroxy acids) exfoliate the skin surface without penetrating pores as deeply, which some people with sensitive skin tolerate better. For pore-focused concerns, azelaic acid is another option with a different mechanism and a comparatively mild irritation profile. Those sensitive to salicylates specifically should look for formulas that rely on physical exfoliation or enzyme-based exfoliants such as papain or bromelain instead.
