What is Sodium Fluoride?
Sodium fluoride is an inorganic salt made up of sodium and fluoride ions. It is synthesised industrially, most often as a byproduct of certain mineral-processing operations. In oral-care products, it serves as the primary source of bioavailable fluoride.
What does it do in the product?
When sodium fluoride contacts tooth enamel, the fluoride ions integrate into the crystal structure, forming a harder, acid-resistant surface that is less vulnerable to bacterial decay. In prescription-strength formulas, it can also help remineralise early-stage lesions. In water fluoridation programmes it plays the same protective role at the population level.

Is Sodium Fluoride something to worry about?
At the concentrations allowed in consumer toothpastes and rinses, regulatory agencies in both the US and EU consider sodium fluoride safe and effective for cavity prevention. The main documented risk is dental fluorosis — white spots or streaking on teeth — which occurs in children who regularly swallow fluoride during tooth development. At very high ingested doses, sodium fluoride is toxic, which is why childproof packaging and dosage limits are legally required.

- Children under six: swallowing toothpaste is a fluorosis risk; use only a rice-grain or pea-sized amount
- People in areas with already-fluoridated water: total daily fluoride intake from all sources should stay within safe limits
- Individuals with kidney disease: impaired kidneys clear fluoride more slowly, so exposure monitoring matters

The FDA classifies sodium fluoride as an active ingredient in over-the-counter anticavity drug products, with approved concentrations capped at 0.24 % (1,100 ppm fluoride) for standard toothpastes; higher concentrations require a prescription. In the EU, the Cosmetics Regulation specifies maximum fluoride concentrations for toothpastes and mandates warnings when fluoride content exceeds certain thresholds, including a child-safety statement. Both frameworks require childproof packaging for high-strength oral-care products.
How to spot it on a label
On toothpaste and mouthwash, sodium fluoride is listed under 'Active Ingredients' alongside the fluoride concentration, usually expressed in parts per million (ppm). A product stating '1,000 ppm F' or '0.243% sodium fluoride' carries a standard consumer-level dose. Labels on products for children under six are required to include swallowing warnings in the US.
What a cleaner swap looks like
If avoiding sodium fluoride is the goal — whether for philosophical reasons or because a child's fluoride intake already meets recommended levels — stannous fluoride and sodium monofluorophosphate are alternative fluoride sources that some people tolerate differently, though they carry the same fluorosis caution. Fluoride-free toothpastes using hydroxyapatite (a calcium-based mineral) are increasingly available and have a growing body of evidence for enamel support, though they are not FDA-recognised as anticavity drugs.
