What is Triclosan?
Triclosan is a chlorinated aromatic compound synthesised from petroleum-derived precursors. It was developed in the 1960s as a broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal agent. Manufacturers have historically added it to personal-care and household products to inhibit microbial growth.
What does it do in the product?
Triclosan disrupts the lipid synthesis pathway that bacteria need to build and maintain their cell membranes, killing or slowing the growth of a wide range of microorganisms. In consumer products it was intended to reduce surface bacteria on skin and extend product shelf life against microbial contamination. Its broad-spectrum action was once considered an advantage, though that breadth is now part of the concern.

Is Triclosan something to worry about?

It remains conditionally permitted in certain healthcare antiseptic products and in one fluoride toothpaste formulation under ongoing review. The EU restricts triclosan to specific leave-on and rinse-off cosmetic applications at low maximum concentrations, and environmental agencies in multiple jurisdictions list it as a substance of concern for aquatic ecosystems.
How to spot it on a label
Triclosan appears on ingredient lists by its full chemical name or sometimes as one of its trade designations; the prefix 'antibacterial' or 'antimicrobial' on the front of a product may signal its presence, though that claim no longer guarantees it. Look for it toward the lower-middle of the ingredient list, where preservative-level concentrations typically sit. Any product making an antibacterial drug claim in the US must list active ingredients separately at the top of the label, which is where triclosan would appear if still used.
What a cleaner swap looks like
For everyday handwashing, plain soap with water is the benchmark against which triclosan failed to prove superiority, making fragrance-free castile or fatty-acid-based bar soaps a straightforward alternative. In toothpaste, stannous fluoride or zinc citrate formulations offer antimicrobial and plaque-control benefits with a more studied safety profile. For antiseptic needs, alcohol-based hand rubs at 60–70% ethanol are widely recommended and avoid the hormonal and resistance concerns.
