How to spot it on a label
On a US sunscreen label, zinc oxide appears under 'Active Ingredients' alongside its percentage concentration, which typically ranges from 5 to 25 percent. If the formula uses nano-sized particles, EU-sold products must say 'zinc oxide [nano]' in the ingredient list; US labels do not currently require nano designation. A 'mineral sunscreen' or 'physical sunscreen' claim on the front of pack almost always means zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or both.
What a cleaner swap looks like
Zinc oxide is already considered one of the cleaner sunscreen options available, so switching from it usually means accepting trade-offs rather than improvements. Titanium dioxide is the other approved mineral filter and avoids zinc exposure entirely, though it offers weaker UVA coverage.
